The excitement builds

We're finally in Brazilian waters (note the Brazilian colors and flag on sci1's shirt)!

Our ETA at the first sampling site is still over 7 hours from now, but the science crew is getting excited. The lab is beginning to feel alive.

The POD (plan of the day) is the topic of much discussion. After a conversation with the captain (that would be the young fellow in the white tee-shirt) and the boatswain (not in this photo), we switched the order of operations. The deck is crowded with instrumentation so the logistics of what to deploy when is not simple. The latest deployment order is as follows: CTD/hydrocast, McLane pump, multicore, giant gravity core, long core, then box core.

Labs and equipment are being checked and double checked. The McLane pump is being prepared, the pore water squeezing apparatus is set up, the Geotek logger is standing at the ready, and washed bottles are lined up and waiting for foram samples. All is at the ready.
